How are we different?

With the current flooded market of Lemax retailers on line you might wonder why Building New Worlds would try to sell something that so many other people are selling and how are we different from all the rest. The answer to the second question is very easy! We offer information for the collectors on home to build displays, how to take care of their village pieces and about different lines of villages also. Unlike the other retailers who just want to sell you their products and do not really know how to do displays or really care, we offer you tips and advice on building a village display that you can only get on our free network. We are also collectors so we know what you need and want! While there are some great retailers on line and some who spend a lot of money on ads and such, we spend more time on information and less time and money on things to sell you on us.
Building New Worlds started with the desire to become a one stop place for collectors to find information, get the best products we can offer for collectors and to be a part of the on line community. Our goal is still the same now as it was then. As collectors of Lighted Villages such and Lemax and Department 56 we feel that knowing what to do with the products is as important as trying to sell them to you if not more.
Here is the recent chatter from founder Neo Dreams on the subject of selling verses information:

"I shop on line just like every one else and there are some people I love to buy from. Some I have shopped from since I first started out. They know the products, which is great but, I would not ask them about how to make water features for my village! I really don't even think most of them build villages. They are too busy selling.
When I first started out this venture I didn't do it to make lots of money, I did it because I was wanting a place to shop and find out what I needed to know. What to do with all those pieces I had. Why would I collect this stuff if I just wanted to look at it in a box? That was in plan for BNW. I wanted to make a place that people could learn from and shop at the same time.
Our 2009 launch of the Next Gen of BNW is gearing up for just that. We are revamping the network and the web store to bring information easier, better and in a way that collectors can use. The products will sell themselves."

With that in mind we look forward to the new era of BNW coming in 2010! We know that we are growing and we feel that BNW offers the greatest information and products around! We hope to see you at our web site coming in 2010 and at our Network which is open 24/7 year around. www.buildingnewworlds.ning.com for the best information at the fastest growing on line community for village collectors there is!

The joys of growing

This past week or so we have been working on our latest new toy, Quick Books! It is a task getting to learn all this at once but it is coming along even though it is slow going with so many things to learn at once! I am not at all a comupter geek so getting the thing to send an e-mail through the program took some toying with tonight but I finally got to send out the first invoice of the year through QB! Now we are almost in business. Its a good feeling when you can work through issues and learn something new like that.
Learning curbs are all over the place right now. We are learning more about venders and which ones work for us and which ones we will have to work on fitting in right for them to work for us later. Shipping...what a trip! It is an adventure every day trying to chose the things that make your business work for you. Shipping was one of those also. There are a lot of choices out there but I find the cheapest and easiest works for me.
While things are crazy here being a business owner just starting out in this economy and with all the task and learning is made more interesting buy working for someone else while I get started. This eats into time I need some days but it also pays the bills and gives me some money (later on) to add to the business. It can be hard at times working on their stuff all day and then coming home to find something I have to take care of right away with mine.
Meanwhile the Network is still growing and I am excited about having some time soon to work on a village again myself. I have not had any time for months now to work on one. The Christmas village is still half done and set up in the studio still. Got to take that down and start on a spring and summer one. Maybe this time I can finish it. I want to get some more tutorials on the Network so I hope this is the season for it.

Coming Soon to Building New Worlds

Over the past few weeks we have been planning out 2009 for our store and made a very change in direct for this year. In keeping with our commitment to bring the best products and service we can to the village community we are happy to announce that soon we will be offering Woodland Scenics products at our store and on our online site also! As those of you know who have come to the Network, we use Woodland Scenics products in our village displays with some wonderful results and now we are going to offer this products to you also. Best yet, if you pre-order with us from now until the end of February, you get a 10% discount on your order. If there is anything that we do not have on our list to order that you want simply e-mail us with your list and we will add it to our order. We will be adding things through out the year for the store and site so check back with us for updates on what we have in stock coming soon! Also take advantage of the discounts.
Along with our commitment to the villager out there we are also getting ready to offer something a little different for 2009. Coming soon we will be offering you a way to wear your village! More details on this will be coming up in another blog so check back with us soon on this interesting bit of information.
While we have been looking at new ways to give the community products and services that you want we have also been looking into video tutorials for making displays and things for your village. We have started accounts on You Tube and Justin TV that are running teasers right now but in the coming weeks we will be to the list. If you have an account on either of those site, look us up under Building New Worlds. We will be posting updates on here, the Network and on Tweeter when those come out also.
With the state of the economy we know many of you are wondering how to keep your collection and your hobby going this year. Over the coming months we will be talking more about this on the Network so, please check in there for some new ways to make things for your village and for ways to cut down the cost of building your displays while making them effective and amazing!

This year was not only an amazing year for entering the contest BUT the results were amazing also. First Place Entry 11 Devin

I want to thank every one who entered this year for this contest and for sticking with me while I brain burped trying to get it going right. Thanks to those who helped me get it back together also.
Each of our members who entered this year get a thumbs up from me. I think this was the HARDEST contest I have seen yet in some ways. My votes were way off the mark in some ways and in others I was on the same page with many of you.

Congrats to every one who entered and those of you who placed!

2009 Progress

This year is still very new but BNW is working on the catch up for this year and looking ahead at what can and can not be done for this year. While we have had some set backs and things are still not looking great there is still a maybe in our tone at this point. Some times that maybe is a weak one but it is still there. Its hard to say what they year will bring so we are trying to keep an open mind. There are some things that make me go "hmmmm", still but I will keep a check on it and more ahead as I can.
Mistakes in 2008 were expected. I am still cleaning those up some right now. Just got a copy of Quick Books, finally so that will help a lot. Had to go back and do some re work but at least there is a light at the end of the book keeping tunnel now! That is a big plus seeing how book keeping in not my strongest point and paying someone to do it right now is not an option.
As time goes on there are more lessons to be learned and more things will come up that we will have to deal with and work through but that is expected. Without those issues we learn nothing! Hopefully we will remember that part instead of stressing when they come up. It is only human I know but not very helpful when it happens. One of the first thing I do many times is think about it, stress some, think some more and then either fix it if I can or move on. That is how I deal with a lot of things. Those moments of stress end up killing time in some ways but then it turns out much better once I get pasted panic mode.
So, this is where we are right now and will be for the next few days, working on catch up and looking ahead to see what happens next. Maybe it will be a good thing, maybe another lesson.

Welcome to 2009!

We started off 2009 here at Building New Worlds with a look back at the year and our wins and loses for the year. There were some great times and some not so great times in 2008. we know where we did good and what went wrong. In the end of the day on New Years Eve we slept better knowing that 2009 was set up and ready for a better year. The best part of today we have been kicking back and web surfing, talking some and dreaming about the year ahead. Its all in a days work.
The last couple of days of 2008 were spend getting 2009 book keeping set up, checking up on the tax records for 08 and planning out the steps to build a stronger system for the new year. In the final hours we feel this will be much more work in some ways but well worth it. Our goals for the new year are pretty lofty but they can be reached with some effort. It is all about working smarted and not getting caught up in the fear factor.
The Network is kicking and growing stronger so we are going to focus more effort into that this year with plans that should boost interest even higher for the coming months. Again goals are high but well worth it we think. Only time will tell what comes of the work in front of us. Our members seem hopeful also. This is a great sign for the coming months.
Over all 2008 was a good year with some pit falls in the mix. We learned from our short comings and will take this into the coming months to give it another go around. The worst that could happen is not trying and ending up with nothing from this. Not part of the plan! We are moving forward to bigger and better things.
